Short But Okay

This is about my field project as the last subject for previous semester. The project was held on January 2nd-12th, and I found myself in 24th group with midwifery students and nutrition students. We got a quite far place to visit: Sumberkradenan, and we spent 50 km a day if we visited the village.

???????????????????????????????

The first thing we did: visit the headmen of villages. Sumberkradenan is a sub-district consist of four villages: Krajan, Jepuk, Premban, and Bonangan. Since my group got elders as our target group, we dug up informations about elders there and found out that Pramban has the most elders. Besides, Premban is the only village which has Posyandu Lansia or Integrated Service Post for Elders health, under the supervision of pre-hospital care unit. After asked about many things from common diseases they have and such, we visited cadre for elders.

???????????????????????????????

We asked cadres to help us to spread invitations for our programmed day on January 10th, the same day as Posyandu was held, in the hope there will be a lot of elders come.

???????????????????????????????

When an elder came, we measured body weight first, then we checked the blood pressure first since hypertension is a common problem for elders due to degenerative function of body. After that, we checked the blood glucose level since diabetes is also a common problem and did some consultation when they reported a health problem. After we finished, we asked whether they wanted to see the professional nurse or not since we collaborated with a professional nurse from PHC unit.

???????????????????????????????

After all elders gathered, we exercised a little bit in the morning with some of my friends as the instructors.

???????????????????????????????

Gave some informations about hypertension, diabetes, and healthy foods. All the participants were very enthusiastic and answer our questions very well, so we decided to give a small reward too.

In the end, we trained cadres how to do exercise for elders because from the information that I got, elders do exercise formally from PHC unit every 3 months and it is very inadequate to maintain elders health. Besides I already visit Elderly Center in PSU Thailand and it has many awesome programs which are still difficult to implement in Sumberkradenan. Well, at least, they came on Posyandu day once a month.

Honestly, 10 days were not enough to make changes to a better condition and we could only increase knowledge of elders a little bit in one day, but what could we do? That’s our faculty’s annual program and every year, people who do the project will change. We love to interact with communities and we love to implement what we have learnt to communities. So really, we weren’t satisfied enough for the results we got. Wish it was longer…
